"Evidence of self" Photoshop Self Portrait collage
DIRECTIONS
- Look through and read the slides in the "evidence of self" keynote posted below.
- Take new photos and gather old photos about your life. What you like, what you are up to. (original images only, no web)
- Sketch images, text, stories, textures... anything you will want to use in your digital self portrait. (take a photo or scan these so you can access them. Look at "ideas from home" & "student examples" sections below for inspiration
- Put them in folder in your google drive .
PHOTOSHOP DIRECTIONS: (NOT FOR CHROMEBOOKS, IF YOU ONLY HAVE A CHROMEBOOK PLEASE USE PHOTOPEA, DIRECTIONS ABOVE)
- Open Photoshop if you you have a computer that allowed you to download Adobe Photoshop (NOT a chromebook)
- Watch the 2 videos below first! You can look up any Photoshop tutorials you want if something else works better, but I think these cover most everything well.
- Setup:
- Click "Create New"
- Name it "last name, first name self portrait"
- Set Width to 12 "In (inches)
- Set Height to 18" In
- Resolution 150. - Background Transparent
- Click Create
- Play around with the program for a bit.
- Do some (if not all) of the "Learn" tutorials
- Go to "Window" in the top menu: open "Learn" window do as many of them as you can!
- These also show up when you hover over certain tools.
- Place your photos from your google folder into the document.
- you can copy (command c) and paste (command v)
- you can also drag and drop images into photoshop
- you can also open multiple images (whole folder) using File>Script>Load Files into stack (watch video "open multiple images a layers in photoshop below")
- Select & Mask your images individually to cut out their backgrounds.
- Some images you may not want to cut out the background and that is fine too.
- Free Transform (command T) to resize images
- Play with layer styles, opacity and adjustments to blend the layers and make your composition. (videos below)
- Read the "requirements" section below for requirements.
- SAVE AS: 2 times.
- File > Save as PSD (this will open in Photoshop if we are able to go back to OPRFHS)
- File> Save as .Jpg, Pop up window> Maximum 100% Quality (if Padlet will not let you upload the file you may have to save as a medium quality, but please save both files in your google folder)
- Move it to your google folder
- Turn 2 ways:
- PSD & Jpg - to the Google Classroom
- Jpg - to Padlet

“EVIDENCE OF SELF” DIGITAL SELF PORTRAIT
PERSONAL ITEMS WITHIN PIECE: (all of these items can be photographs or scanned)
PHOTOSHOP REQUIREMENTS:
- You are creating a LARGE 12”x18” self portrait image
- Layers, Masking, Opacity, Effects (Filters/Textures), Adjustments, Scale, Layer Styles, Saving.
- The image will compiled of: collected images, gathered sentimental or important objects, personal photographs, found items to scan for backgrounds, writing samples to be included as text.
- You will be developing a layered PHOTO MONTAGE or COLLAGE of images and items that best describe you.
- You want make a STATEMENT that comes together as a completed ARTWORK.
- You will be creating an overall mood—through color, hue, saturation, texture, opacity, & depth.
- Keep in mind the RULE OF THIRDS, balance, negative space, use of space/layout.
- There really are no limitations to how involved you piece is.
- Experiment and enjoy the process!
PERSONAL ITEMS WITHIN PIECE: (all of these items can be photographs or scanned)
- Photograph of yourself *Can NOT be screenshot or from Snapchat, FB, etc… - poor quality
- Texture
- Object of sentimental meaning
- Text (hand written, typed, or collated)
- Must include minimum 8 words *May be a quote or 8 different words with significance to you.
PHOTOSHOP REQUIREMENTS:
- Include minimum 8 different LAYERS *More = better!
- Change the OPACITY or on one or more of the layers or selections.
- Layer Style on at least one layer (make sure it is not applied to all layers below it, use ⌘click to apply )
- Manipulate SCALE( free transform = ⌘T )of images to make interesting compositions.
- Use a FILTER/EFFECT on at least one layer.
- Use an ADJUSTMENT on at least one layer. (To apply to only one layer= Mac- alt> click on separating line between layers, PC- bottom of properties panel, click>box with down arrow)

- Please scan or take photos of some examples of texture. Consider how they feel, how they might scan, how they would look if photographed.
- Notebook paper crinkled, folded, burned, spray painted, etc.
- Newspaper—drawn on or painted on
- Foil
- Saran wrap
- Tissue paper
- Burlap
- Denim
- T-shirt
- Clothing
- Blanket
- Leaves, grass, hay
- Wood
- Hair
- Towels
- Personal belongings (significant meaning or importance)
- Take and put in your google folder or email yourself at least 5 photos that represent you, your family, friends, or someone important to your character (use highest resolution possible when taking and sending)
- Gather any photos from your life that you feel represent you. This is a self portrait so everything in this piece should represent you in some way.
- Finally, include some of your own writing or drawings or sketches—you may type these in Photoshop/Photopea or scan them in or take a photo.
